DALLAS — Beginning August 1, 2011, The Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future will present “Citizens at Last: The Woman Suffrage Movement in Texas,” an exhibit created by the Woman’s Collection of Texas Woman’s University Library and produced by Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 ended the women’s suffrage movement and represented a great victory for American women in their quest for the right to vote as U.S. citizens. Texas was the first state in the South to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment, a landmark achievement for all citizens engaged in the struggle for representation. “Citizens at Last” focuses on the 27-year campaign for votes in Texas.
Based on the book “Citizens at Last: The Woman Suffrage Movement in Texas,” the display uses archival photographs, newspaper clippings, cartoons, cards and texts to display the struggle in Texas.
In conjunction with the exhibit, on August 24, 2011, The Women’s Museum celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment with a lunch and program by Melissa Prycer, Director of Education, Dallas Heritage Village at Old City Park. Prycer’s presentation, A Larger Housekeeping: Dallas Clubwomen and World War I, bring to light the thoughts, experiences and trials of Dallas women promoting women’s suffrage during World War I.
The program begins at 1 p.m., following the Dallas City Hall Proclamation, and is FREE to the public. Lunches are available for purchase prior to the event, visit www.thewomensmuseum.org. The Women’s Equality Day program and exhibits are sponsored by AT&T Yellow Pages.
The Women’s Museum: An Institute for the Future, in association with the Smithsonian Institution, is the nation’s only comprehensive women’s history museum that chronicles the lives of American women through interactive exhibits.
